The Balkan Scholars Foundation offers several scholarship programs designed to support students at different stages of their academic careers.

Our scholarships are open to students of Balkan heritage worldwide who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and financial need. We believe in investing in talented individuals who will make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Our Scholarship Programs

Undergraduate Scholarship

Up to $15,000/year

Our flagship program supports undergraduate students pursuing bachelor's degrees at accredited colleges and universities worldwide. This scholarship can be renewed annually for up to four years, provided the recipient maintains good academic standing.

Graduate Research Grant

Up to $25,000/year

Supporting graduate students conducting research that benefits the Balkan region or addresses global challenges. This grant provides funding for master's and doctoral students to pursue innovative research.

  • Enrolled in master's or doctoral program
  • Research relevant to Balkans or global impact
  • Strong academic record

STEM Excellence Award

Up to $20,000/year

Recognizing and supporting outstanding students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This award aims to increase Balkan representation in STEM fields and support the next generation of innovators.

  • Majoring in a STEM field
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in major courses
  • Demonstrated passion for STEM
  • Undergraduate or graduate level

Community Leadership Scholarship

Up to $10,000/year

For students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to community service and leadership. This scholarship supports future leaders who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities.

  • Balkan heritage (self-identified)
  • Documented community service (50+ hours)
  • Leadership roles in organizations
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Any field of study

Application Process

Follow these steps to submit your scholarship application.

Check Eligibility

Review the eligibility requirements for each scholarship program to determine which ones you qualify for. You may apply to multiple scholarships.

Gather Documents

Prepare your academic transcripts, proof of enrollment/acceptance, financial information, and any other required documentation.

Write Your Essay

Compose a personal statement (500-1000 words) describing your academic goals, connection to Balkan heritage, and how the scholarship will help you achieve your dreams.

Request Recommendations

Obtain two letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, employers, or community leaders who can speak to your qualifications.

Submit Application

Complete and submit your application through our online portal before the deadline. You'll receive confirmation once your application is received.

Interview (If Selected)

Finalists may be invited for a virtual interview with our selection committee. Decisions are announced within 6-8 weeks after the deadline.

We consider Balkan heritage to include ancestry from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey (European part). This includes first-generation immigrants, descendants of Balkan families, and members of the Balkan diaspora worldwide. We accept self-identification of heritage.

Yes! Our scholarships are open to students worldwide, regardless of citizenship or country of residence. You must be enrolled or accepted at an accredited institution, which can be located anywhere in the world.

Yes, you may apply to any scholarship programs for which you meet the eligibility requirements. However, you can only receive one scholarship award per academic year. If selected for multiple scholarships, you'll be awarded the one with the highest value.

Most of our scholarships are renewable annually, provided you maintain the required GPA, remain enrolled full-time, and submit a brief renewal application. Renewal is not automatic and depends on continued eligibility and available funding.

Our selection committee reviews all applications holistically, considering academic achievement, financial need, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and alignment with our mission. We look for students who demonstrate both potential for success and commitment to their communities.

Scholarship funds are typically sent directly to the recipient's educational institution to be applied toward tuition and fees. For other approved expenses (books, housing, etc.), funds may be disbursed directly to the student with proper documentation.
